Aristotle on Geometry and Disposition: Metaphysics T9, 1051a21-33

In his seminal book 'Dispositions', Stephen Mumford suggested that Aristotle recognized abstract dispositions such as ‘divisibility by 2’. This paper argues that although Aristotle certainly admits that the word 'dunamis' is used in geometry, his actual idea is quite different from what Mumford assumes he endorsed. I shall show that Aristotle does discuss abstract dispositions at Metaphysics T9, 1051a21–33, critically examining the epistemological reading of the passage endorsed by commentators.
