Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (externally funded)
The Project and the Faculty welcome enquiries from early-career researchers interested in applying for externally-funded postdoctoral fellowships in Philosophy with Oxford as the host institution. Two major sponsors of postdoctoral fellowships in Philosophy are the British Academy, and the European Research Council (Marie Curie Fellowships). Candidates are also encouraged to seek information about other schemes, such as Newton Fellowships (offered jointly by the Royal Society and the British Academy).
Advice and support to candidates applying under these schemes is available from the research facilitation team based in the Humanities Divisional office. The Humanities Division Research Facilitator with responsibility for Philosophy can help candidates prepare their applications for submission, and can provide the necessary budgetary details. The Philosophy Faculty’s Research Coordinator, a member of the Faculty’s permanent academic staff, can also provide expert feedback on the content of the application.
Importantly, an internal deadline operates for all external funding schemes which require the University to act as the host institution and normally (but not always) this falls two weeks in advance of the sponsor’s own deadline. Junior Research Fellowships (externally funded)
Many Oxford colleges offer Junior Research Fellowships in philosophy, from time to time. JRFs can be paid or unpaid and their intention is to offer academics in the early part of their career (including those in the final stages of completing a doctorate) college and University facilities in order to undertake research. Competition for these posts is usually fierce. JRFs are generally advertised on college websites and in the University Gazette.
